We have decided to meet this month at the church. With so much going on because of the holidays and all the decorations we will have in our homes we were not sure we want to invite a bunch or preschoolers there! Also we will take the Friday before Christmas off and the Friday before new years off. So we will be meeting at the Church on Friday Dec. 2nd, 9th and 16th at 10 am.

If anyone gets board during the holiday let me know and we can plan a play date!

Unless it is miraculously beautiful out I think we should move playgroup inside for the day and maybe for the winter! I will host playgroup at my place. I do need to leave my house just after 12 for Elsie's preschool so make sure to come on time to get the most play time in! We are excited to have you come over.

December Book Club

For the month of December we are reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens so we thought we would go see the play being preformed at the Hale Centre Theater. We are planning on going on the night of December 10th at the 5pm showing. Mary Doyle is spear heading this so if you are interested in coming please contact her. Andrew Lake is preforming in the play and should be preforming at this showing so we are exciting to see him there as well. Happy reading!

Of course, I did find out that the ward Halloween party is the same day as Book Club... So, we will be moving Book Club to Saturday, Oct. 29th, at 8:00 p.m. We'll be chatting about the book (among other things, I'm sure...) at The Chocolate (9100 S. Redwood Road). This is a fun little dessert cafe, so even if you haven't read the book, come join us for some yummy food and fun company! Meet at Laurie Ashdown's house at 7:45 if you'd like to carpool.

Playgroup change For Friday the 7th

The weather forecast says it will be cold and rainy on Friday the 7th. So we were thinking we could meet at the church for playgroup. We usually use the gym so the kids can run around. If we each bring a few toys to share the ids should stay occupied. Spread the word!!!

Witch Fest?

A few of us were thinking that it might be fun to get a group together to go to Gardner Village for the Witch Fest. There is a scavenger hunt here on their web page which if completed will get your kiddo a cookie for 35 cents. I know I think it used to be free but I guess you have to pay now. We can also just walk around and enjoy the fun witches!!!

The weather is going to be yucky tomorrow and looks good next week so lets plan on Thursday Oct. 13th. I think to accommodate the most people we should meet there at 2:30. This way naps can still happen and people who have to pick up kids from the bus can be done in time!

Playgroup seems to be doing quite well on Friday's so lets keep it there for October. You all must be sick of hearing from me last minute about things but here I go again! We started emailing about this 2 days ago and just nailed down that tomorrow Friday September 16th is going to be the best day for us to meet.

Since last months meeting did not happen as planed we are trying again at Zupas restaurant in South Jordan at 8 pm. We have been told that they have some lovely chocolate fondue. Please come even if you have not read the book it is fun to talk to people who have and to get good ideas as to what to read next. Also I think a few of the regulars are a little behind on the list (I know I am). This month's book is Sarah's Key - by Tatiana de Rosney.

I have been gone for quite a while but I am finally back. As I understand it playgroup has been meeting on Wednesdays at 10 am. We are going to change that to meet on Fridays at 10 am at the town homes park. We can talk about locations this Friday (tomorrow) and see if people prefer to just do it at the town homes or not. Fall playgroup

I just wanted to get your thoughts on playgroup for the fall again! After talking to several of you I think that Friday mornings might be the best time to meet. I know it is not ideal and does not break up the week but I think most of us have plenty of preschool and other thing to do that for us. So give me your thoughts. Is Friday a good day and is 10am still a good time? I also wanted to see how you all liked having it at the townhomes every week and if we should continue that until the weather does not allow it?

August Playgroup

So August is starting now and I thought we could make the last month of Summer very easy by having playgroup at the Townhomes playground each Wednesday morning at 10am. If anyone hates this we can talk and find another place to go if we want but I think most might like the simplicity of it.

We have a bit of a challenge ahead of us too. We need to figure out what day this fall works with the most schedules. I have been asking some of you this and it is all over the board. So many of us have kids in preschool and school now that it is hard to coordinate times. So please respond to this post and tell us what day is best for you.

We are even thinking of rotating days...like 1st and 3rd Tuesday's and 2nd and 4th Wednesday's. We would most likely keep it at 10 am to avoid afternoon nap times but lets be open to any time...maybe we could rotate that with the days of the week too. I guess we should keep it less complex but we do want to include everyone who wants to come.

The Activity Day Girls need your help

The Activity Day Girls want to learn more about babysitting and so with the help of their leaders they are going to watch your kids. Please come on Wednesday July 13th to the church. We are still having playgroup on Wednesdays at 10 am. So bring your kids and some sunscreen and come join us for some fun!

July 6th Murray Park (main park between the rec center and outdoor pool)
July 13th the Townhomes park OR you can bring your kids to the church where the Activity Day Girls and leaders are going to be watching kids as a service to you and as a babysitting experience for them! The babysitting will only be from 10-11 am and the girls have several stations to rotate though for the kids. It will be geared to younger ones as the girls themselves are as young as 8 and as old as 11! It should be fun. You do not have to be a regular at playgroup to come to the church everyone is welcome! After 11 everyone can go down to the park for some fun in the sun!!

We have all talked and decided to move playgroup to Wednesday at 10 am. This breaks up the week more and should still fit most peoples schedules we hope. So for JUNE...

Backyard Movie Night Cancelled

May RS Field Trip-Recap

This last Wednesday was our RS field trip to the West Jordan conservancy garden. For those of you who were not able to join us I wanted to post a recap of what we did, saw, and learned.

First off it was a wonderful evening with perfect weather and even more perfect company. We had a guided tour of the gardens by a young man that I think by the end of the night most of us wanted to bring home to tend our lawns and gardens. He showed us all the wonderful water saving ideas and examples at the gardens along with answering ever little novice lawn care and garden question us ladies could think of. We learned that we are probably watering our lawns a little to much...there is a bigger variety of planting style options that will work in our area than most of us thought...and our husbands could probably use a trip to the garden as-well.

One thing I learned that I probably already knew, but was hoping there was an easier solution to was that to get rid of weeds especially dandelions you just have to pick them and keep picking them so that they do not spread. There is no magic solution or spray out there that is going to do the work for you. Listening to the tour guide tell me this as I had just left a yard full of blooming white puffy dandelions at home made me somewhat depressed but eager to attack the problem. The next day I got my bucket and started zig zagging my way across the backyard picking every little dandelion I saw. I only got half way through the backyard when my back started hurting and seeing a million more dandelions than I had already picked still mocking me on the other half of the lawn got to me. I knew if I didn't pick them though that they would just spread seeds and reproduce, adding even more to the job I was going to have to do sometime. I wondered if my ancestors who farmed and settled Utah hated pulling weeds as much as I did or if they just "maned" up and accepted it because it had to be done to live and produce crops. Then I got real deep in my weeding thoughts and wondered what other dandelions I had in my life that needed to be weeded. What other things had I left unattended that were now stacking up and get much worse than if I had stayed on top of them. The laundry for sure, but what else? Had I let bad feelings for someone grow and spread seeds in my heart that were now going to take longer for me to work and clear out than if I had just never let those feelings grow in the first place. Had I neglected daily scripture study to the point that it seemed daunting to start again and get back on track? Then with dandelions still on my brain all weekend I was noticing while driving around town that some yards were so much worse than others, but the fact of the matter was that even the nicest lawns if I looked hard enough had a dandelion or two. It just taught me that some of our struggles are more visible than others and some struggles if left unattended to can get out of control and unmanageable, but that all of us have something we struggle with. With most struggles too just like weeds there is no magic quick fix, it just takes a lot of good old fashioned hard work to fix most things. Good thing we have the greatest gardener of all times on our side, the Lord. He wants to help us weed through life's struggles to find everlasting joy in his light.

So needless to say I encourage all of you to visit the conservancy garden with your families. It is free, and a peaceful place to take a stroll (if you can keep your little ones out of the flower beds). And a big thanks to Shauna Young and Diane Cook for coming up with and planning such a great activity for us.

Hello fellow parents we are starting a new month so we must start a new playgroup schedule. I need your input. When should we start meeting at parks? Is May too early to count on good weather? Why don't we discuss this on Monday at the church and then I will fill the rest of this out after that!

Update:
We think after next week we might chance it outside and maybe have a backup plan for those rainy days. So lets do the 1st, 3rd and 5th Monday at the park at the townhomes and then I will pick other parks for the 2nd and 4th Mondays. Oh we are also thinking Wednesdays might be better starting in June.

I was talking to a few of you at playgroup on Monday about changing times again. It would work better for me and a few others to start at 10 again. This also will get us used to it as we go to parks this summer and we might want to beat the heat a little. I will be hosting next week so come at 10 or soon after. I have to start feeding Elsie around 11:30. You are welcome to keep playing or have some snacks at that point but we have to get ready to leave for to her new preschool at 12:15. I wanted to take a quick moment and make you all aware of some issues that have been brought to our attention. On Sunday we had a vehicle broken into during our meetings. Apparently this has happened over the past few weeks during other Ward times as well. We just wanted to remind everyone when parking during our meetings, please make sure that all valuable items are out of sight, or left at home. Unfortunately there are many out there that look for opportunities to take what is not theirs. If you could please pass word onto others in your groups and auxiliaries it would be greatly appreciated. As many of us live around the building, lets do what we can to make sure that it is safeguarded whenever possible. Thanks again for all that you do!

I have always struggled off and on with doing my Visiting Teaching. Even though there are times I have been great at it it seems as though life eventually creeps in and I fall off track. I have even been guilty of not visiting teaching and wishing my visiting teachers would come visit me. Silvia H. Allreds' message in the Ensign gets back to the basics of Visiting Teaching, and she gives us some basic ideas that may help us get the inspired assignment of Visiting Teaching accomplished:

I think as women we often times find ourselves counting and adding up all the things we have or did not accomplish in the day, week, month, or year. I know from experience this leaves me feeling down and out. Lets not let visiting teaching be one more thing on that list and lets also give ourselves credit for all the other little acts of service that I know we all do all the time in our families and ward. GNO - Book Club

Fun @ Church History Museum

Just wanted to share a fun activity the girls and I did this morning, in case some of you are like me and like new ideas of ways to entertain the troops...

The Church History Museum on West Temple downtown has some really fun kid-friendly exhibits right now. One is very hands-on about the Book of Mormon. There's Nephi's boat to play on, "gold" plates to examine, giant building blocks with which to re-create Zarahemla, kiosks with BoM-related computer games on them, and other fun stuff. And right by the entrance of the BoM exhibit is a quilting exhibit, that, conveniently enough, also has some hands-on elements for little ones. And down in the basement is a display of art created BY Primary kids as well.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. It was a fun, FREE activity with the kids. Parking downtown can be a little tricky, but there are FREE 2-hr parking spots along 2nd and 3rd West, between North and South Temple, if that helps...

Hello Ladies! With my new calling settling in with me I started thinking about the RS blog and began picking Tiffany's brain about a few things. I love that we have one, and would love to see if we can utilize it even more than we already are as a relief society and community. Tiffany has been kind enough to give me permission to start changing some things (well maybe a lot of things) and I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up. So bare with me while I start making changes and by all means PLEASE keep blogging away.

Thank you Tiffany for starting and maintaining such a great thing. I know it has been wonderful for me personally, and was a huge help to me when I first moved into the ward.

So I hope everyone is okay with me doing this. I would do a mock raise your right hand sustaining, but I wouldn't be able to see it anyways. lol

Passing the Playgroup Torch?

So, I'm trying to take Pres. Uchtdorf's advice about simplifying and slowing down as I get ready to welcome a new member of our family next month (remember the turbulence and speed bump analogies?). Anyway, so I realize that it is going to get harder for me and the girls to make it to playgroup consistently. So I was wondering if anyone else was interested in taking over the planning of playgroup? You could follow the same format we're doing now, or come up with something of your own--I'm not possessive of it at all!

Anyway, if you're interested, let me know. I've loved having a place to let the girls play with their friends and for me to have some adult conversation each week! I just know that I might become a little more flaky as we adjust to the schedule of a newborn again, and that morning nap times will make it harder for us to come every week. If there aren't any takers--that's all right. Maybe we'll do it through March (rotating the church and different homes like we've been doing), then take a month or two off. Then we can pick it back up when the weather is warmer, and we can start going to playgrounds again.

A fundraiser for a family in need ...

I'm posting this on the Simply Sisters blog in hopes to get some help from anyone who has a little extra time, or might be able to help me put a fundraiser together for a family who just lost their little girl to cancer. Her funeral was yesterday; she was just 5 years old.
I didn't really know this family but the little girl went to Austin's preschool (Corner Canyon Academy); and my mother-in-law owns the preschool so I've heard a lot about this family these past few months. I went to Maryn's viewing Sunday afternoon and it was overwhelming; she was such a beautiful, perfect little girl. I gave Maryn's mom a hug and she said, "I just keep thinking she's going to wake up, just look at her, she's just sleeping". Oh my, I just cried.
She's been on my mind so much lately and I would do anything to help this sweet mom. She's a single mom with two older daughters and from what I know about her she's been very tight on money. She took Maryn to Disneyland a few weeks ago because she knew her time was short but had to finance the trip because she's tight on money right now.

Here's what I'm HOPING/ASKING of you: the first Saturday of March (3/5) I'm going to try and get as many people to come out and help raise money for Maryn's family. I'm going to bake cakes, treats, make some fleece blankets, and just try and come up with anything that I can auction off. Any donations (cash, goods, and/or services) would be awesome. And the more people that come out to buy the stuff up for auction - the better. If any of the youth are trying to do any service projects, we can auction their time for babysitting, yard cleaning, car detailing, you name it - I can help print up coupons or vouchers that can be auctioned off for services. Please let me know who might be interested in helping me.

If you can't no worries! But if you can, please let me know right away so I can start working on this.

Maryn Nicole Cella 2005 ~ 2011 Maryn Nicole Cella, Age 5 - From the heartbroken, loving arms of her mother into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, our sweet, beautiful and beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, student and friend, Maryn Nicole Cella passed away January 25, 2011 peacefully surrounded by her family and friends, following a courageous 19 month battle with a rare and terminal form of brain cancer (DIPG). Born on October 20, 2005 in Sandy, Utah. She was a pillar of light and love, and touched the lives of many people all over the world. She was a beacon of inspiration and happiness, though her days were numbered. Maryn came into the world like a lamb, quiet, peaceful and happy. She grew into a playful, happy child who loved to play with her friends and sisters, dance ballet, read books, play piano and play outside. She loved to paint and draw and most of all loved her dollies and her stuffed animals. She brought happiness to so many people and fulfillment and meaning to her mother's life. She and her mother were inseparable from the day she was born. They loved each other deeply and together bravely fought the disease that eventually took her life. Maryn also loved her daddy very much. They spent many days making special memories together. She will be deeply missed. Maryn is survived by her mother, Annette Cella; father, Travis Cella (Wannisa); sisters, Olivia (14) Moriah (10), half-brother, Alex and step-sister Sara; grandparents, Gerald and Margaret Bowen, Ron and Judy Cella, as well as many aunts, uncles and extended family. Book Club update

We changed the February book to Matched by Allie Condie. The original book was My sisters keeper, which Mary said is good but she had to stop reading it due to the colorful language used in it.

In regard to when we should meet. Caralee brought up the fact that the RS girls night out is on the fourth Thursday of the month and having us out of the house for two nights in a row might be too much. So how does the third Friday of the month sound to everyone?? It works for me. Happy reading!

Hello ladies I am hosting book club this Friday night Dec. 3rd. at 7:30. Sorry for the short notice. We will be talking about two books. Our book for Oct. was Frankenstein by Mary Shelly and our book for Nov. was The Hundred-Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais. I have not had a chance to read them yet so if you haven't read them please come anyway. It should be a fun night. I will prepare some goodies so just come ready to chat about books.

The December book is Hercule Poirot's Christmas by Agatha Christie. We also need to think about what to read next year so come with some ideas.

Hey everyone,

I feel like a broken record on here, but I need help again. My babysitter for my son is having a baby and therefore quitting and I am in need of someone for only one day. I already found a babysitter for Thurs. and so now I just need a babysitter for Tues. 7:30-5:30. This would be a great way to bring in a little bit of extra money. I am hoping that someone here would like to do this, knows of someone else who would like to, or could refer me to a place you have used for you child that isn't too expensive. Any help/suggestions would be very appreciated.

Winter Playgroup Plan

So, now that the weather can no longer be depended on to be great, I guess I better get out of denial and plan indoor options... What we'll plan on doing is meeting at the church each 1st, 3rd, and 5th Monday of the month at 10:30 a.m. I'm pushing the time back a little later, because that will make it a little easier for us to arrive at roughly the same time. I don't want the responsibility of leaving the church doors open (and I want to make sure our kids are safe with no unexpected guests inside), so I'll hang out at the North doors on the west side of the building (just north of the primary room) to let everyone in. And if you arrive later than that, you can just give me a call on my cell, and I'll come to the door. My number is the 414- one listed in the directory (I'll try to also send it out in private emails to those of you I know usually come, but please let me know if you don't have it...).

We'll probably be hanging out in the cultural hall (unless I find out that it's okay for us to also use the nursery, but I'm not sure if that's appropriate, since it's not an official church activity--we'll see). So, if we each bring a toy or two to share, then there should be plenty to keep the kids occupied. We won't be reserving the building, so there's no guarantee that there won't be other activities going on, but on a Monday morning I doubt that will happen very often.

A few of us talked a few weeks ago that it would also be fun to rotate homes on the 2nd and 4th Mondays. That way the kids have a variety of things to do, and no one house is over burdened. I'll take this next Monday, the 8th. If someone would like to volunteer for November 22nd and someone else December 13th, that would be great! Let me know or leave a comment on this post. I don't think we'll plan on doing it December 27th. Then, if this idea seems to work, we'll worry about planning January a bit later. I figure people will only have to host a few times to make it back to warmer months. But if you don't feel able to volunteer to host--please don't let that stop you from coming and playing anyway! We don't care--we just want the kids and moms to have a chance to get out of the house and have fun!

Bottom line: This coming Monday at Ashdowns at 10:30. The following Monday, the 15th, at the church.

Sorry I am so late about posting this! I think I'm still just recovering from a pretty hectic week... Anyway, the weather is supposed to be decent tomorrow, so I think we'll try the playground at the townhomes at 10:00.

In a few days, I hope to have a plan about what to do now that the weather is colder,so you'll have a post from me again soon. I think it will involve meeting at the church some weeks and rotating homes some weeks. If you would be willing to host playgroup a time or two this winter, let me know.

If you didn't know, I do the singing time in the Primary. Since I'm going to be out for a while with the new baby, I need to get ready for Christmas songs before then.

For one of the songs, I would really like to use pictures of the children in the ward and was wondering if you could check your Christmas pictures from last year as well as a few others. I know the kids would LOVE to see pictures of themselves as we learn the song, so any help you could give me so that I don't have to go around and take pictures would be greatly appreciated. I need to get them this week since I'm having the baby in less than 2 weeks.

So, for playgroup on Monday, we thought it would be fun to head to Wheeler Farm. Hopefully this nice weather will last! We'll meet by the main doors to the big main building @ 10, or come look for us among the farm animals if you get there later. So, I'm HOPING that the weather on Monday will be nice enough to play! The girls and I are getting quite sick of each other in the house together...

Monday @ 10 @ the adaptive playground at West Valley City Park. We've been there a few times before, and it seems to be a favorite... It's fenced, partially covered, and there are no wood chips or sand to worry about being messy if it's still a little wet.

Anyway, here are directions:take Redwood Road to 78th S. and turn right (west). Turn left (south) on about 20th W. by the Veterans Memorial park sign. Follow the one-way park road to the right (west) and around to the southwest corner of the park. The playground is on your right, just past the "Field of Dreams" baseball diamond and across the street from the tennis courts.

Then the next playgroup will be at the townhomes.

Double Book Club

I thought it was time to have another book club, and because we did not have one in August, it will be a Double Book Club :) It will be this Friday at 8:00pm at my house. We will be 'discussing' The Help and To Destroy You is No Loss. Remember everyone is invited. Treats will be provided. Who can come? I will probably be making some calls because of the late notice, but I thought 'either now or never' :)

October's book is Frankenstein by Mark Shelly. Book club date to be announced.

Grocery Deals

The Smith's on 54th South has their Smith's milk, one gallon whole, marked down to 1.15 (expires Aug 26). (I didn't notice if they had the 2% or 1% marked down...)

They also have a few boxes of Dannon Coolision yogurt tubes (great for freezing) clearanced to .80 each (in the back, in the little cooler next to the refrigerated juices and SunnyD). Use the $1 off coupon from the SmartSource 8-15 insert and get them for FREE!

In that same little cooler are also several 64oz Tropicana Pure Premium Low Acid orange juice - I believe they are clearanced to about $1.35.

In the deli section (cheese and lunch meats), about halfway down the aisle are some clearanced Oscar Mayer Lunchables. There are single-serve sandwiches (Chicken and American Cheese) for .79 and some Lunchables meals with the chicken nuggets clearanced to about $1.67.

Playgroup Wednesday @ 10 @ Murray Park (west of the outdoor pool).

Also, starting next week, playgroup will be moving to MONDAYS instead of Wednesdays. Hopefully everyone who usually comes or would like to start coming will be able to make it! We'll continue going to playgrounds as long as the weather stays nice. I don't really have any plans of what to do when it gets too cold to go outside. Any suggestions?

Activity Days: Lemonade Stand

The Activity Day Girls (ages 10-11) will be doing a lemonade stand on the church lawn Tomorrow ( Wed Aug 18th ) from 5-6pm. We would love to see you there! So take a stroll to come see us and we will cool you off with some fresh Rosemary Lemonade and sugar you up with a Pink Lemonade Cupcake for your walk back home.

All the earned money is going to be donated to the ward Mission Fund and the girls will be passing it off as service project. Thanks!

Hey ladies,

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in being a backup babysitter for my son. I have a regular babysitter for him when I am working (Tues. & Thurs.), but there are those days where she can't do it and I have no other options. My husband was working from home, so it worked out, but now he is not and I need a emergency babysitter. Most of the time, I will know in advance of the days she can't do it.

I pay $30 a day, he will be 3 years old next month, potty trained, and I think pretty easy. Let me know if you are interested or know of someone who is.
